MY TITLE

TITLEEEE.png

November 22 2020

This is my specially created title. I used pain 3D in my HP laptop. It took me a lot longer than i anticipated as  I had to partially hand draw this and i had difficulty working Adobe Illustrator. I have several mockups of this title in different fonts and sizes and shapes and this is the one  finally chose.

Cover Story Brainstorming

While brainstorming for cover story we were asked to creatively output our ideas into 4 seperate subtopics which included , Review , Interview , Guide and Features. Many of my classmates decided to use chartpapers but i decided to use prezi to make it seem more professional. the link to my prezi is on my next slide

MY FINAL COVER STORY

My Final cover story revolves around the narrative of identity and what that means in this world which is defined by geographical borders , territories and even more vast things as Religion. However I want to minimize my approach regarding this query to Pakistan. Pakistan has an identity that has been shaky since it's birth in 1947. it emerged from a war torn zone with rulers from foreign lands that were insistent upon social and racial stratification. Did our identity start emerging then? under that rule or did it emerge due to our unification under the banner of Islam. And how exactly does our identity tie into our culture that was shaken at the roots under two different rules , first from the British the the HIndus. These are all questions that can be pondered upon.

However a new phenomena has also emerged that has thrown the age old question about identity into a frenzy. and this phenomena extends beyond borders and has enraptured the entire world , not only Pakistan. Most people call it Globalization. Globalization has occurred

through various means , that extend to global trade that has made available all kinds of cultures in regards to ornaments clothing and costume , over borders and territories and secondly through media.

When vast reaches of network and satellite tv extended all over the world aided by social media it is often said that cultures and identitIes had a new age of enlightenment.

I have decided to implement this vast idea in a cover that is thought provoking in nature. This starts out by choosing the right location the right editing and the right kind of picture to get my message across. My first idea regarding the final picture was to go to the Lahore Railway , and take a picture of the train which stands in a stark contrast to how it looked during India - Pakistan massacre , where thousands of men clung to the rail vying for safety , and on the other hand it also regarded the breach that the Indian subcontinent suffered at the hands of the British where they lay down the railway. For better or worse the railway represented the time spent by the British in the subcontinent , and since my idea revolves around the idea  of Identity , the period spent colonized seemed like a huge milestone to cover. However I could not let this idea for my cover picture take root as these are the times of pandemic and it is much harder to be safe in such a place.

Written Article

After the added pressure of completeing a lot of work in this part of the magazine making , writing th article was on of my favourites and something that came easy to me. I love writing and have always been somewhat good at it. Moreover, since the subject i was writing about , " Identity and Nationality " is something i am very passionate about. It was not a hard task to have a lot of material on this subject as writers like Edward Said and Frantz Fanon were my point of reference.

PLANNING  my
COVER SHOT

December 2 2021

PLANNING MY OTHER SHOTS

Aside from my main cover shot I planned 4 other shots to make sure if at least one of them did not work out how I planned it then i will have a backup

1. My first shot is planned as so; it will be a two shot where my two models will be holding hands. Taimoor willl be wearing a red painted basket ball on his head and Noor will be wearing a cardboard television on her head. it will be on the road. I plan for it to be a prespective picture

2. My second shot is planned as an Aerial shot. My models will be lying on the floor and their background will have only red paper. I plan for it to be a medium shot with red paper covering the eyes of my models.

3. My third shot will be similar to my cover shot. It will be a high angle shot where both my models will be covering their eyes . I plan to keep a lot of headspace to keep my subjects miniature.

4. The fourth shot is a bit different , which is something media teacher told me might be beneficial as the models I have chosen are mere representatives of my idea. My 4th shot involves a frying pan and an kitchen exhaust pipe. They will be shot in red light and in a background that seems perturbing in their misplacement

PLANNING

INSPIRATION

I had two main inspiration for this entire project. The rest of the planning i drew up from studying conventions and codes of photography. Those two inspiration came from two completely opposite spectrums. My first inspiration was a French artist Louise Bourgeois , and her work "Documents of Memory'. The picture on the left is her work. Th other inspiration i picked from was this college student who did work on themes of identity as well. After an enlightening conversation on the meaning and importance of identity i decided to take inspiration from him in on of my shots.

MEANING

Behind every shot lies a thought out process and meaning that according to me accurately translates my abstract theoretical idea ido something symbolic and visual. According to me and the political topic of of my lead article Pakistan lies in a heap of a dust like a broken mirror whose shards reflect not the sky of it's own nations but a morphed version of what life should look like built on ideals passed down to us in a self repressive delirium dating back to the colonization, hence i use the basketball painted red. The red according to me is symbolic of the hate and rage that the nation has gone through first for their colonizers and then for themselves and still seeking their leadership after getting a pseudo version of freedom. Like an algae it attaches itself to  our minds and covers our identity , by covering the face hence the facial expressions and eyes famously regarded as visually key parts of identity in works of many artist i talk about the fracturing of identity, alongside this the television that covers noors head , alludes to the globalisation that has undertaken the world through media dnd oher transnational companies where no culture is safe in it's home town. (DISCLAIMER ; i do not follow this school of thought of globalisation skeptics , it is just an interesting perspective i chose to represent).

My second shot as an aerial shot is just an extension of the first where the covering of eyes and the red carry the same meaning , however getting it in another angle and stylistically different helps show the abstract nature of the visualization and accentuates the representative function of my models where they themselves are not being paraded around as celebrities. However by using an aerial shot I delve further into the meaning of powerlessness and and being swamped ina sea of red ( red represents a sticky algae like covering that prevents from Pakistan's identity from creating any self growth.) Further emphasises the existence of something unnatural or a history that  old someone or something back.

My third Shot where the models themselves pu their hands over eyes as a high angle shot is a commentary on the how this powerlessness and amalgamation of identity that exist within Pakistan is helped along by its own throttling hands that looks towards the IMF and WTO's model of of development . By deciding to sit on the shoulders of western growth of model and looking towards their culture with a heart full of self deprecation it can easily be commented that Pakistan has become its own identity's butcher.

By using the 4th shot i create a visualization that falls away from my other shots which uses human models, By doing this I comment on the messy existence of this problem that exists with or without Pakistanis adding to it. The alienation one feels when looking at a  frypan sitting not in a kitchen where it belongs but sitting ina dark corner with a mysterious red light alongside a kitchen exhaust pipe that should be hanging from a ceiling or attached to some working part , but lies dauntingly on a r=frypan comments on the coming together of unnatural forces to create something that should not have been. To further break it down it comments on the alienating and isolating feeling that the identity of Pakistani's undergoes from the onslaught of a western culture and that is both hated and adored , of seeking to be and hating to be themselves and of constantly blaming their own nation for its shortcoming as a nation of jahil ( unethical and immoral) peoples making things worse while failing to see a the bigger picture where we live in our own country and continue to look towards our once colonizers to provide us with our history.

Introduction to My Models

To work on my magazine cover i had to ask two of my friends to volunteer to be my models. Both of these people have been instrumental in my decision to take media. Noor , who is in dramatic team in one of my peer schools was fascinated by he opportunity. Moreover, the reason why it was so important for me to feature the two main genders was to remove any gender bias or particularity; as I wanted to make sure my message was generalized across genders and not confined to one.

Taimoor Shahid

He would be helping me by providing transport to my location. furthermore , by modelling for the front cover

Noor Fatima

i want to introduce her by saying she herself is a student of media studies which is one of the biggest reasons i asked her for help. Her validation for my idea was much needed and appreciated
