MY CONTENT PAGE

My content page is on the right. i went through several dog magazines to find the conventions of the index page on magazines. i observed the pictures and the subheadings re prominent and the font is often kept very small as to allow a lot of content to fit in. i chose the colour pale green to allow the other items on the page to become more apparent. I kept "doggopia" as the biggest text on the page to let the eyes be drawn to it in the first instance, Beyond that, to keep all the cotent in the same size and color i made the first sample in the first line i put the layers for the index number the first title and the line undreneat in a group, copied it and pasted it. i clicked the Alt + Shift key , while pasting it to allow all the index to remain aligned. Another thing i purposely kept apparent were pictures. i arranged them in a way to guide the movement of the eye from the first picture to the last. while my typography knowledge is not that potent yet , i allowed bold serf font to be there in the subtitles to give them more visibility

 The final preliminary task cover

The overall look of the magazine was kept inviting and targeted an audience that were looking to read light and informative text on their pets. i kept only three colors on the entire cover to allow more visibility. the colours red and yellow were kept to add a pop of color and playfulness to themagazine whereas i used black to balance this. The strip on top of the masthead gave the magazine more serious credibilty. "meet the PUG" is my coverline and it provides the function of giving my magazine the quirky presence. The barcode and the puff fulfill the conventions of pet magazines. the overall colour palette allows it to be a quirky magazine fulfilling another pet magazine convention. The Masthead was kept purposefully large with the dog head edited to be on top it giving it an air of quality.

SETTINGS

when we open a new page in photoshop certain settings need to be specified in accordance with the needs of the project. for my preliminary magazine i chose to keep the size 8 by 11.5 inches as it is an easy portable size for  a magazine. I kept the resolution at 150 instead of 300 for this as instead of getting printed i will be directly uploading the file on my blog. a lower resolution allows lower uploading time in printed media we keep the color mode at CMYK , however since this is not getting printed the color mode was RGB.

SUBJECT OVERLAP

One big reason for creating the preliminary task was to practice creating a magazine on photoshop and to experiment with different conventions. For this reason i employed the lasso tool in adobe photoshop to cut out the subject , copy it on to a different layer and then move the layer on top of the layer that had the title. This way the subject was on top of the title the little head covering it.

PUFF

Puff is an important convention of certain magazines. Pet magazinea often feature puffs as they sell to a certain audience that may be receptive to cute features from the magazine. i made the puff using an ellipses tool in photoshop. The convention usually shows the puffs as round therefore i kept a round puff. I used the the text tool to write down each word for the sentence in a different layer. which made it easier to edit.

My Coverline

The main coverline was kept red and yellow and the each word was kept on a different layer. I maneuvered the color overlay on texts by navigating the options available for editing text. To keep the yellow colour constant in the main coverline , coverlines and and tagline i used the eyedropper tool

Text layers

instead of using the text tool to write paragraphs i kept each word for the coverline in a different layer to make it more capable of change in spacing and size.

My Photoshoot

While doing my photoshoot I made many mistakes. the first picture i took placed my subject ( my pug) as too small and the headspace and foot space was extremely large. then after several more photoshoots and a very large effort on my part to make my dog look in the camera or stay still ( i bribed her with a carrot, yes she eats carrots ) I finally got some very nice shots. i chose to display my pug on the cover picture as it was much harder to get nice full shots of my German shepherd who used to run up to you and push you to the floor if you showed even the slightest inclination of crouching. ( i have some very awkward shots of me taking those pictures)

MAGAZINE LAYOUT

To bring my preliminary magazine to a completeion point i must plan it right? so well this is a part of my panning. i looked at some magazine examples and decided this how i wanted my layout to be

My Preliminary Excercise

Finally since we have finished our planning for the final product we are moving on to creating a preliminary magazine that will serve to strengthen the final project and allow us to navigate the art of magazine making. Personally i think the process is very important as it will allow us to get an idea of our strengths and weaknesses for the final project. while sir was explaining it to me the ide a that came to me was about making it a dog magazine. one of my classmates is doing this for her final project and being honest it was a little hard not being jealous because i love talk about my dogs and taking their pictures. i think it will be a fun and learning experience. This way i will be able to replicate all my findings in my final project

The magazine will be 8.5 by 11 inches , the name is going be "DOGOPIA" inspired from the word utopia and inculcating it in a quirky manner with dog. It will be a pet magazine and it will feature my dogs and now my models , my pug "Lara" , and my German shepherd " Evvy". Another reason for choosing this topic and magazine genre was for the easy of availibity. i chose an external location for my final project therefore i went for something more available

Furthermore i decided that my home lawn will be the best place to do this shoot and i will be using my dog's little SpongeBob costume to make it more cute and appealing. The equipment i will be using is my DSLR camera nikor. I don't have as much practice with as i would like so i believe this is the perfect chance to get some experience
